FRISCO MUSEUM TO OFFER PINE NEEDLE BASKET WORKSHOP
Creating baskets from natural materials is one of the oldest known crafts. Pine basketry dates back over 9,000 years, before crafters were making pottery. For Native Americans, pine needle baskets served many utilitarian and decorative purposes, and over the years, the creation of pine needle baskets has developed into an intricate and beautiful art form. As a means of preserving pine needle art, the Frisco Native American Museum & Natural History Center will present a pine needle basket workshop on April 24, 2009. The workshop will be taught by two master artists, Loretta and Herman Oxendine, elders in the Lumbee nation.
The Oxendines live in Pembroke, North Carolina, and carry on the traditions of their heritage through the creation of a number of crafts. Loretta learned the ancient art of basket weaving at a very young age by observing her older sister at work. A stately and beautifulwoman, Loretta smiles when she talks about weaving a basket."Each basket begins with the careful selection of pine needles to ensure the best quality for the finished product. A basket may take from 5 to 50 hours to complete depending on the shape and size. And because each weaver brings a special approach to the art, no two baskets are ever exactly alike."
Loretta and Herman Oxendine have continued a generations-old family tradition which they have elevated to a fine art. Their baskets have been featured in a number of museums and have been sold in art galleries across the east coast, including the Frisco Native American Museum gift shop and the Smithsonian Gift Shop. The pine needle basket workshop will take place at the Frisco Native American Museum & Natural History Center on Friday, April 24, 2009, from 9 am to 2 pm. The workshop fee of $35 covers the cost of lunch as well as all materials for each participant to make a small basket. Since space is limited, pre-registration is required.
Individuals may contact the museum at 252-995-4440 or visit the web site at nativeamericanmuseum.org.

Porch Programs - Chicamacomico Lifesaving Station
All programs run June, July and August at 2:00 pm at 1911 Station, except Beach Apparatus Drill which starts at the 1874 Station. All programs last about one hour. All are free with regular paid admission for self-guided tour of 7 acre, 8 building site.
Monday – Live from the Set of Nights in Rodanthe. 2:00 p.m. Chicamacomico Site Operations Manager, Linda Molloy, had a role in this Warner Brothers movie opposite Richard Gere. Come hear her exciting story and ask her to autograph the book and DVD available in the Gift Shop. A most unique vacation souvenir.
Tuesday – America’s Forgotten Heroes: Amazing True Local Wreck & Rescue Stories. 2:00 p.m. Site Manager James Charlet gives a brief overview of the United States Life-Saving Service, predecessor to today’s Coast Guard, and highlights some of the unique and special things about the Chicamacomico site. Then he narrates in detail three dramatic and daring rescues that happened right here, culminating with the nearly unbelievable Mirlo rescue of 1918.
Wednesday – The REAL Taffy of Taffy of Torpedo Junction. 2:00 p.m. Taffy of Torpedo Junction was a fictional work first published by the University of North Carolina Press in 1957 and recently re-released. It tells the dramatic story of a 12 year old girl living on Hatteras Island and is set during World War Two. It was written by Nell Wise Wechter who previously had been a teacher at the only school on Hatteras Island. One of Mrs. Wechter students was the then 12 year old Carol Dillon. The Taffy character was based on her. Ms. Dillon is alive and well as the owner and operator of the Outer Banks Motel in Buxton, where the lighthouse is. As is often the case, the truth is better than the fiction. Come hear Carol tell about this incredible and little-known period in our history . And yes, the book is available for purchase and autographing.
Thursday – The Beach Apparatus Drill. 2:00 p.m. This popular re-enactment of the historic Breeches Buoy rescue is only performed in two places in the entire country; and Chicamacomico is proud that ours is the only one performed by active-duty U.S. Coast Guard personnel! A unique and interesting demonstration.
Friday – What REALLY Happened to the Lost Colony? 2:00 p.m. Once you know the basic true facts, it is no mystery at all! Scott Dawson will mesmerize you with his vast knowledge and staccato style. He is the author of a book on the subject and lectures widely. And why this topic at a lifesaving station? Because in their day they were the social, cultural and educational centers of their villages. This is precisely the kind of topic a visitor would hear there. chicamacomico.net

Oakwood Waits Christmas Concert
8-10 pm. Film Theatre. The Oakwood Waits was founded in 1984 when a quartet of friends went out to sing carols in the historic Oakwood district of Raleigh, NC. Their name was derived from this historic district where they first performed, and from an old English term “wait,” meaning street musician or town watchman. Through the past twenty-one years, the Waits have evolved into a professional a cappella vocal ensemble of 17 singers, clothed in Victorian costume (Charles Dickens era-1840s), that perform from a collection of more than 120 songs and carols of the holiday season. This collection includes both traditional and lesser-known songs of ancient to modern times with origins from many different countries. They are a versatile group who have mastered many styles, and have a wide appeal for audiences as they present a variety of music. In any given performance audiences are treated to music ranging from traditional, classical, shape note, jazz, Appalachian, and children’s favorites. The cost of admission is $10.00. (252) 475-1500.
