We will try to keep them as up to date as possible, but please take a detailed map with you before you leave. Norfolk International Airport is the closest major airport to the Outer Banks. You'll be glad to know the sun and fun of the Outer Banks beaches is approximately 90 miles down the road - a short 1 1/2 hour drive.

The Chesapeake Expressway is the new Route 168, a four-lane divided highway linking Interstate 64 in Chesapeake to North Carolina and the Outer Banks.

Alternate 1
From Chesapeake, VA to Whalebone, NC (By way of VA/NC 168, US 158)

1 - From I-64 in Chesapeake, take Exit 291 for US 17 South, VA 168 South
2 - Merge left on VA 168 South
3 - Follow VA 168 South into North Carolina - VA 168 South becomes NC 168 South
4 - NC 168 South becomes 158 East at Barco
5 - Follow US 158 East to Whalebone

Alternate 2*
From Chesapeake, VA to Whalebone, NC (By way of US 17/158, NC 37/32, US 64)

1 - From I-64 in Chesapeake, take Exit 291 for US 17 South, VA 168 South
2 - Merge right on US 17 South
3 - Follow US 17 South into North Carolina
4 - Take US 17 South by-pass around Elizabeth City
5 - Continue on US-17 South to NC 37 South
6 - Turn left on NC 37 South
7 - NC 37 South becomes NC 32 South
8 - Follow NC 32 South to US 64 East
9 - Turn left on US 64 East
10 - Follow US 64 East to Whalebone

*Recommended when heavy traffic congestion during peak Summer months causes back-ups on Alternate 1
